As some of you may know, the eight of us have been eagerly awaiting the publication of our book, Professional Flex 3. Well, I’ve just received confirmation the book will be out in stores around end of May, and that Wrox will have 20 advanced copies of the book, hot off the press (literally), ready for givaways at 360|Flex in Indianapolis this coming week.

Yesterday a colleague of mine asked how our book was going, and how big was it. What I told him sums it up pretty good:

8 authors, 1400 pages, 75 chapters, 12 sections, 750MB of code, 18 months.

You can download a PDF of the table of contents here to give you an idea. It’s a hefty volume — the ToC alone is like 31 pages!!

You can also reserve your copy on Amazon now, or buy it from the publisher’s site when it’s out in stores.

I cannot say enough about these guys, it’s been hugely awesome working with my co-authors throughout this process, including the tech editors and all the great folks at Wrox. This has been a monumental and amazing journey, for all of us. A year and a half ago, I wanted to write the most kick ass, comprehensive and exclusive Flex 3 book out there. To really paint a broad and deep view of the entire Flex ecosystem of technologies. So after getting together seven other amazing programmers and communicators, and writing for many many months, we’ve done it. There are things in this book that you will not find anywhere else.

There are a few things we did differently with this book than I’ve seen with other tech books. Chris Webb, one of the senior Editors at Wrox said it best when he quipped, “You can be fast, fabulous or frigged. I guess we’re going for fabulous.”

Most tech books in our field are fast: they’re written when the software is still in beta, to be out in the stores ASAP. This has the disadvantage of allowing unintended errors to creep into the code, and into the text, despite everyone’s best efforts. Because this is such a large book, and there are so many details that could be potentially missed, we’ve taken extra care to make sure everything will work in this book. On hand to keep us authors on track were the amazing folks at Wrox, plus five tech editors: Matthew Fabb, Charles Bihis, Campbell Anderson, Greg Jastrab and Douglas Knudsen (WORD!). Plus a helping hand from Steve Webster — many thanks goes to to Adobe Consulting for lending us one of their boy geniuses for the endeavour. I’m not sure if this is the norm, but I swear I must have edited every one of my 11 chapters like six times, each time as it goes from tech editing to proofreading to final review. At 75 chapters, 8 authors and 8+ editors, that’s a whole lot of editing goin’ on.

So I really really hope everyone likes it.

Another thing we did differently from many books is that the code will be available on a public Subversion repository for anyone to download. Which means that fixes will be just a commit away. And Wrox has set up a user forum for the book, so if anyone has any problems running the code in the book, one of us will be glad to help. More on this when the book officially launches end of May/early June.

For those of you sniggering in the corner cause Flex 4 is coming out later this year, wondering whether you should buy this book, well, I doubt Cairngorm or FlexUnit or the Automation framework or the Data Services Stress Testing framework will change much by then, and we’ve got all that in the book. And since Flex 4 is not a feature complete component set, well, you’ll still be using Flex 3 (halo) when you’re using Flex 4 (spark). Early chapters also have tons of Flex Builder optimization tips, and there are chapters on languages, on tools, components, frameworks, best practises, and way too many other goodies to mention here — check out the ToC PDF link above. So don’t worry, this baby will still be relevant at least until Flex 5 comes out.

And please, when it does come out in stores, or if you’re one of the lucky ones to get an advanced copy at 360|Flex, read it slow, or your brain will like frickin’ explode. Consider yourself warned.

See ya at 360|Flex!!

Update: the book is now out in stores as of May 29th.

When do you think next version of this book (now Flex4) is going to launch?

I came across this useful and interesting blog while doing an online search to come up with the relevant information that I was looking for to help me to complete my school intern research project.
